SHAP3D®

SHAP3D® is a thermoplastic filament developed and patented by Orfit Industries for use in Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing processes. It is intended for the fabrication of custom-made devices, including orthotic applications, by qualified professionals.
Biocompatibility
Not all 3D printing materials are suitable for applications involving skin contact. Material selection is therefore an important consideration when creating customized orthoses. SHAP3D® filament has been tested according to ISO 10993-1:2025 for biocompatibility related to prolonged contact with intact skin. Our biocompatibility certificate is available on request.
Remoldability
Most 3D printing materials, including polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), PLA, TPU, and ABS, are difficult to remold or adjust after printing without high-temperature equipment. SHAP3D® offers a practical alternative by allowing local adjustments using simple heat sources such as a water bath or a heat gun.
SHAP3D® begins to soften at approximately 45 °C (113 °F) and becomes remoldable from approximately 55 °C (131 °F). This allows professionals to adjust fit and shape throughout the fabrication process, using techniques similar to those used with traditional thermoplastic materials.
Easy printing and finishing
SHAP3D® works reliably on a wide range of FDM printers, so there is no need to invest in a new printer. The material sticks well to the print bed, and shows minimal shrinkage, giving consistent, high-quality results with less risk of failed prints. With SHAP3D®, you can skip the step of drying or preheating before printing.
After printing, SHAP3D® can be easily finished through local heat application. A smooth surface can be achieved by locally dipping in hot water (55–65 °C / 131–149 °F) or using a heat gun where required. No chemical finishing processes or complex post-print processing equipment are needed.

This material is designed to fit smoothly into your workflow, compatible with most 3D printers and software, giving you the freedom to work with the tools that suit your practice best.
SHAP3D bridges the gap between traditional and digital fabrication: hand therapists and orthopedic technicians can apply the same post-processing techniques they already use with thermoplastics, making the transition to 3D printing easy and intuitive.

The process starts with a digital scan of the patient’s limb, which is the basis for creating a digital model of the orthosis. This model is then sent to a 3D printer, which constructs the final orthosis with precision, ensuring a perfect fit tailored to the patient’s unique needs. Orthoses made with SHAP3D® can be adjusted based on the patient’s new clinical condition that can include swelling or decreasing of swelling, using hot water or a heat gun.

SHAP3D® is engineered to be humidity-resistant, eliminating the need for preheating or drying of the filament. Skipping this step leads to a faster working time.
